Driveways, patios, lawns and gardens for period homes and new estates alike.

Landscaping in Wymondham

Hilton & Green Landscaping is a family-run landscaping firm based at Long Stratton, about a dozen miles away, and Wymondham is one of the towns we work in most often after Norwich itself.

Wymondham is a historic market town south-west of Norwich, known for its abbey and its seventeenth-century Market Cross, and it has grown a great deal in recent years. That gives it two quite different kinds of garden: established plots behind older properties in and around the centre, and new-build gardens on the estates that have grown up around the town. A fair share of our driveway work is on period houses here.

Period homes and new estates

On an older house, a new driveway has to suit the house as well as take the weight of the car. The material, the edging and the way the drive meets the front garden all show from the street, and on a period property a surface that looks too new jars. We talk through the options at the first visit and can bring samples, so you can see how each will sit against the brick and flint.

On the new estates the challenge is underneath. New-build gardens usually have thin topsoil over subsoil compacted by the build, so turf laid straight on top struggles and planting sits and sulks for years. Proper preparation first, breaking up the ground and bringing it back to life, is what makes a new-build garden take.

Between the two are the established gardens that need renovation: tired patios relaid, fencing that has come to the end of its life replaced, and borders reworked.

Driveway installation in Norfolk by Hilton & Green Landscaping

Clay, and the Tiffey valley

The ground around Wymondham is typical of mid Norfolk, where much of the soil is heavy clay. It holds water in winter and dries hard in summer, so a driveway or patio needs a properly dug and compacted sub-base with the right depth of stone, and drainage planned rather than assumed. Laid without one, a drive tends to rut and a patio to move and pond within a few winters.

The River Tiffey runs through the town, and gardens on the lower ground near it can stay damp. There, levels and falls are planned to carry water away from the house, and planting is chosen for moist soil.

Planning and permissions in Wymondham

Wymondham is in South Norfolk, so planning goes to South Norfolk Council. The historic centre is a conservation area, and many of the older houses in it are listed.

Driveways are where the rules most often apply. Paving over more than 5 square metres of a front garden needs planning permission unless the surface is permeable, such as gravel, permeable block paving or resin-bound stone, or the water runs off onto a lawn or border. A new or widened dropped kerb needs approval from Norfolk County Council as the highway authority, whatever the driveway is made of.

In a conservation area you must give the council six weeks’ notice before cutting back or felling most trees (any with a trunk more than 75mm across, measured 1.5 metres up). A tree with a Tree Preservation Order needs the council’s consent first. At a listed building, a new wall, fence or gate within its grounds needs planning permission, and work that touches the building itself needs listed building consent.

Fences, walls and gates up to 2 metres high normally need no planning permission. Beside a road used by vehicles, or the footpath of one, the limit is 1 metre, which is why a tall front boundary often needs an application. Decking and raised patios more than 30cm off the ground need planning permission.

Questions from Wymondham customers

Have a question not answered here? Get in touch and we will be happy to help.

Do you lay driveways on period properties in Wymondham?

Yes. A fair share of our driveway work is on period houses in Wymondham, and we choose the material and finish to suit the house.

Do I need planning permission for a new front driveway?

Not if it is permeable, such as gravel, permeable block paving or resin-bound stone, or drains onto a lawn or border. A solid surface over 5 square metres that drains to the road needs permission, and a new dropped kerb needs Norfolk County Council approval either way.

Why does the sub-base matter so much on Wymondham clay?

Clay holds water in winter and dries hard in summer. A drive or patio laid without a properly compacted sub-base of the right depth tends to move, pond and lift within a few winters.

Can you set up a garden on a new-build plot?

Yes. New-build gardens usually have thin topsoil over compacted subsoil, so we prepare the ground properly before laying turf or planting.

Do you cover the villages around Wymondham?

Yes, including Hethersett, Spooner Row, Wicklewood, Morley, Wreningham and Ashwellthorpe.
