Gardens in and around Long Stratton
The town strings out along the A140, which follows the line of a Roman road, so it mixes older houses on the main street with estates built over the last few decades, and more homes are planned around the town. Each brings a different job: renovation and replacement fencing on the older plots, reworking tired patios and lawns on the established estates, and full set-up on new builds, where the topsoil is thin and the ground compacted by the build.
Out in the villages, gardens are bigger and many back onto open farmland. That means more boundary to fence, more wind coming across the fields, and hedges that need proper care. It also means room for the kind of full redesign a town garden rarely allows.

South Norfolk clay
Long Stratton sits in the heavy clay country of south Norfolk. Clay holds water in winter and dries hard and cracked in summer, so we plan drainage from the start, dig and compact a proper sub-base under patios and paths, and break up and improve the ground before a lawn or border goes in. Laying straight onto clay is how slabs end up moving and ponding a couple of winters later.
Timing matters too. Turf takes best in the milder, moist stretches of spring and autumn rather than a dry summer or a frozen winter, and on clay it pays to wait until the ground is workable rather than churning it up when it is saturated. Plenty of shrubs and perennials do well on clay once you know which to reach for, and choosing those at the start saves replacing plants that were never going to thrive.
Planning and permissions in Long Stratton
Long Stratton is in South Norfolk, so planning goes to South Norfolk Council and highways to Norfolk County Council. Most garden work needs no permission, but a few rules are worth knowing before you start.
The A140 through the town is a classified road. A new or widened driveway entrance onto it needs planning permission as well as highway approval from Norfolk County Council, so a drive on the main road takes longer to arrange than one on a side street. Paving over more than 5 square metres of a front garden needs planning permission unless the surface is permeable, such as gravel, permeable block paving or resin-bound stone, or the water runs off onto a lawn or border.
Fences, walls and gates up to 2 metres high normally need no planning permission. Beside a road used by vehicles, or the footpath of one, the limit is 1 metre, which is why a tall front boundary often needs an application. Decking and raised patios more than 30cm off the ground need planning permission.
In a conservation area you must give the council six weeks’ notice before cutting back or felling most trees (any with a trunk more than 75mm across, measured 1.5 metres up). A tree with a Tree Preservation Order needs the council’s consent first. Hedges and trees are best cut outside the main bird nesting season, which runs from March to August. Damaging an active nest is an offence at any time of year.

Where are you based?
Hilton & Green Landscaping is based at Long Stratton in south Norfolk, and works across Norfolk and Suffolk.
Do you cover the villages around Long Stratton?
Yes, including Tharston, Tasburgh, Hempnall, Hapton, Fritton, Wacton, Forncett and the Pulhams. They are all within a few miles of our base.
What work do you take on in Long Stratton?
The full range of domestic landscaping: fencing, turfing, patios, driveways, planting, ponds, tree work, garden maintenance and full garden makeovers.
Do I need permission for a driveway onto the A140?
Yes. The A140 is a classified road, so a new or widened access onto it needs planning permission as well as dropped kerb approval from Norfolk County Council. A drive onto a side street normally only needs the highway approval.
Is the clay in Long Stratton a problem for a new lawn?
Not if the ground is prepared. Heavy clay needs breaking up and improving before turf goes down, and turfing is best done in the milder, moist weeks of spring or autumn.
